Mosquito Creek Whitewater Race

Join the Somba K’e Paddling Club for the inaugural Mosquito Creek Whitewater Race, sponsored by Jackpine Paddle! This is a just-for-fun event for pretty much anyone with even a little bit of whitewater experience. Mosquito Creek, located just outside of Behchoko, isn’t difficult whitewater, so newer paddlers can test their skills, but it’s technical and twisty enough that we think more advanced paddlers can still have fun trying to find the fastest line.

You must be comfortable in continuous class II whitewater with rocks, and you must be able to wet exit.

Kayaks are the preferred craft, but solo whitewater-specific canoes and SUPs are allowed (with some conditions – see the race rules for details). The club has a limited number of kayaks available to borrow if you don’t have your own. If you need a kayak or other club gear, you can let us know right on the registration form.

Since this is the first time we are running this race, event participation will be capped at 10 entrants. We’re keeping it pretty low-key for now so we can focus on the essentials  and make it bigger and better in the future. But we’ll still have:

>A practice lap and two timed race laps
>Prizes
>A fire after the race, with hotdogs and such

There is (non-glamorous) camping on site if you’d like to stay overnight.

Membership – required

To race, you must be a member of the SKPC, the Fort Smith Paddling Club or another club under the Alberta Whitewater Association. If you’re not yet a member, register at one of the links below.

This race began as an argument whether it was possible to paddle around Latham Island in Under 20 minutes. Many have tried, a few have come close but to date no one in memory has broken the 20 minute barrier. Give it your best shot in earn a place in the Yellowknife Folklore as the paddle that finally settled the age long debate.

National Canoe Day

SKPC will be hosting a open paddling event on the evening of Wednesday June 26th in celebration of National Canoe Day!

Anyone can come hangout on the water and get a nice evening paddle in! There will be a introductory stock / marathon canoe stroke session run by Shona Barbour for paddlers looking to learn this method or practice their technique.

We will meet at the small parking lot at the end of Grace Lake on Kam Lake Road (just after the sled dog crossing) at 7pm.

We encourage people to dress up / decorate their canoes to celebrate! There will be a prize to the best decorated canoe.

Please bring your own canoe, paddles + pfds and other required safety gear if you have it. The club does have two canoes, extra life jackets and some extra paddles that will be made available.

Winter Sessions at the Pool

Thanks very much to club volunteers (Blair Carter, Paul Woodard, Dave de Lugt, and Dan Wong) who showed up to get newer paddlers into kayaks and on the water! This was the 2nd of three pool sessions. Despite a lengthy delay due to a kid vomiting in the pool during the preceding public swim session (could have been worse), we all had a great evening and had a chance to work on some sweet skills, including a canoe roll demo from Dave!

Thank-you very to the Get Active Grant Program from the Northwest Territories Park and Recreation Association
